Buttermilk biscuits

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1-1.5 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tsp baking powder

Directions

Cut or rub with your fingers the shortening into the dry ingredients until the shortening is in very small pieces. It should look like very coarse meal with some larger pieces. Stir in the buttermilk with a fork and let stand for 10 minutes. Turn out on a floured board and knead lightly about 10 times. Roll out to about 1/3 inch thick and cut. Place on a baking pan and bake at 450 degrees until brown, about 10 minutes.
